Hoodies with Arabic calligraphy and Islamic phrases, embroidered or printed on unisex cotton hoodies. Each design is a word or a line worth wearing: Salam (peace), Sabr (patience), the opening chapter of the Quran in Kufic script, the skyline of Makkah, and a whirling dervish drawn from the word for love. Below the grid: what each design says, how it is made and how it fits.
What each design says
- Al Fatiha: Surah Al-Fatihah, the seven-verse opening chapter of the Quran, set in Kufic, the angular script used for Qurans from the eighth century. Printed on a classic-fit hoodie in black, navy or maroon.
- Embroidered Sabr: صبر, patience, stitched on the chest in five colors. The Sabr Outline traces the same letters in outline. Read what sabr means.
- Embroidered Salam: سلام, peace, embroidered in six colors from black to light pink.
- Makkah al-Mukarramah: the Ka'bah, the minarets and façade of Masjid al-Haram, "Makkah al-Mukarramah" in Arabic across the top and أُمّ ٱلْقُرَى, "Mother of Cities", one of Makkah's names in the Quran.
- Peace and Love: سلام و حب, with a whirling dervish whose robes are drawn from the word حب, love.
- Dervish Hub: a whirling dervish in sport grey, white, light blue or light pink, a nod to the Sufi turning ceremony and the practice of dhikr.
- United Arab Republic: الجمهورية العربية المتحدة, after an official poster of the 1958 to 1961 union of Egypt and Syria, for anyone who likes their calligraphy with a dose of twentieth-century history.
- Embroidered Pakistan Zindabad: پاکستان زندہ باد, "long live Pakistan", in Urdu Nastaliq script over a map of Pakistan. Urdu is written in the Arabic alphabet, so it sits naturally with the rest.
Embroidered or printed
Sabr, Sabr Outline, Salam and Pakistan Zindabad are embroidered: the letters sit raised on the fabric and keep their color through years of washing. Al Fatiha, Makkah, Peace and Love, Dervish Hub and United Arab Republic are printed, which suits the fine detail of a full surah or a skyline. Everything is made to order.
Fabric, fit and sizing
Most of these hoodies are 100% cotton with a kangaroo pocket and ribbed cuffs and waistband; the Al Fatiha hoodie is a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend with a classic fit. All are unisex. The embroidered Sabr hoodies run small, so take a size up. On the standard-fit styles, women often take a size down for a closer fit. Sizes run from S to 5XL on most designs and S to 3XL on United Arab Republic. Each product page has a measurement table.
A note on wearing Quranic text
Some people prefer not to wear verses of the Quran in every setting. If that applies to you, the Salam, Sabr, Makkah, Peace and Love and Dervish designs carry words and phrases rather than verses.
Gifts, and the rest of the range
For Eid, order early in Ramadan: everything is made to order. The same calligraphy is on sweaters, long sleeves and T-shirts in the calligraphy collective, and the Sabr and Salam collectives add hats, totes and stickers to match. Our hoodies collection has every hoodie we make.
